NEW DELHI: Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the appointment of new CBI Director Ranjit Sinha be put on hold and the next appointment should be made under the proposed Lokpal Bill.
The senior BJP leaders said the report of the Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha on Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill 2011 was tabled in the Upper House on Friday.
Among several recommendations made by the Committee, one important recommendation was that the CBI Director will be appointed by a collegium comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Chief Justice of India.
“This recommendation has been unanimously made by the Select Committee and hopefully will be a part of the law, which will be legislated very soon.
This unanimous recommendation indicates that political and national opinion has now converged in the direction of taking the power away from the government of the day alone to appoint the CBI Director since empirical evidence shows that these appointments were motivated by collateral considerations,” Ms Swaraj and Jaitley said in the two-page letter.
